President’s Message

WELCOME BACK to the Stroke Recovery Association (SRA) of Edmonton.  We are very sorry that we had to cancel our January 2008 SRA meeting but due to the very cold weather, it was best for everyone to stay home where it was nice and warm!

Who are we?  We are a “unique” Support Group for SURVIVORS of Stroke, their caregivers and loved ones who meet at the Glenrose Rehabilitation Hospital, on the last Monday of each month to socialize and hear a special guest speaker.  We have meetings in the months of September, October, November, January, February, March, April and May.  For our December meeting we have an Annual Christmas Pot-Luck Dinner and in June we have an Annual SRA Picnic!  We do not meet over the summer months (July and August) but we do have an answering machine, please phone (780) 485-3052, leave a message and someone will get back to you.  We also have a website at www.sraedmonton.org.

Our SRA Executive and Board of Directors are all stroke survivors and caregivers.  At the October 29th, 2007 Annual General Meeting I was again voted in as your President (I’m a caregiver), our new Vice-President is Marie Connell (also a caregiver), our Treasurers are Fred Chow (a stroke survivor) and his wife Alice Chow (his caregiver), our Recording Secretary is Jorie Clements (rep. from E.B.I.R.S.) and our Newsletter Editor is Craig Roxburgh (stroke survivor).

On The Lighter Side

A businessman on his deathbed called his friend and said, "Bill, I want you to promise me that when I die, you will have my remains cremated."

"And what," his friend asked, "do you want me to do with your ashes?"

The businessman said, "Just put them in an envelope and mail them to the Internal Revenue Service. Write on the envelope, 'Now, you have everything.'"

Just One Person

To the world you might be one person;

but to one person you might be the world.

People gather bundles of sticks to build bridges they never cross.

Life is 10% what happens to you and 90% of how you respond to it

Life is like an onion; you peel off one layer at a time

and sometimes you weep.

Learn from the mistakes of others.

You can’t live long enough to make them all yourself

Following the of least resistance

is what makes rivers and men crooked.

“Imagination is more important than knowledge.” - Einstein

Our members-at-large:  Bev Decore (caregiver), Michele Clapp (caregiver), Joan McCreight (caregiver), Shawn McCreight (stroke survivor), Richard Feilden (caregiver), Anne Feilden (stroke survivor), Cindy Schulz and Andrea Brown (both work at the Glenrose Hospital).  We also have a phoning committee (Michele, Joan and Marie) who regularly phone our membership list to remind people about our meetings and special events. THANK YOU to each of you for taking on these “volunteer” positions.

We hope everyone will enjoy attending our monthly 2008 SRA meetings.  We have some new programs to present, special guest speakers and FUN get-togethers planned!  THANK YOU to the Program Committee (Jorie, Andrea and Cindy).  Please look over the 2008 SRA Calendar of Events.  If you have any other ideas and or topics you would like to hear, please contact me…at our SRA number 485-3052.

If you are “new” to SRA, we are very happy you have come to visit us!  If you are a paid member – thank you for your “financial support” to our membership!  If you are a non-paid member – PLEASE see Fred or Alice Chow and they will gladly take your membership money and get you paid-up and in “good standing”!   Our membership fees are very reasonable at $10.00 for a single person or $15.00 for a family, for the year!  We also welcome charitable donations and a tax receipt will be issued to you for them.  We are a “non-profit” organization but we do have some expenses to be paid.

Until next month, Bye4Now…

Jorie Clements’ Auto- Biography

Hi, my name is Jorie Clements and I am the Secretary for the Stroke Recovery Association of Edmonton since March of 2007.  I grew up in Pincher Creek, Alberta, a small town known for its mountains and windmills.  I am the second oldest child in a family of four girls.  I was married last summer in Southern Alberta to Max (my husband).  I have one niece, Melia who is 18 months old.  I am a Rehabilitation Therapist for the Edmonton Brain Injury Relearning Society (EBIRS). I wanted to join the Stroke Recovery Association because of the field I work in and for my Grandfather and Uncle who both suffered from Strokes.

At EBIRS I work on cognitive rehabilitation such as memory, attention, problem-solving, planning, etc.  I get to help survivors of brain injury get back into their community again through volunteering, exercise, and providing rehabilitation directly in one’s familiar setting.  EBIRS is a program that can offer compensatory cognitive strategies for individual’s looking to continue their rehabilitation and progress after they have been discharged from hospital programs.  I really enjoy being able to volunteer with the Stroke Recovery Association of Edmonton and look forward to meeting more members as we attend the meetings together.

Real friends are those who, when you feel you’ve made a fool of yourself,

don’t feel you’ve done a permanent job.

Sometimes the majority only means

that all the fools are on the same side.

I don’t have to attend every argument I’m invited to.

Lead your life so you won’t be ashamed to sell

the family parrot to the town gossip..
