PRESIDENT’S REPORT  

 

WELCOME to the Stroke Recovery Association (SRA) of Edmonton.  Did you happen to miss our January SRA Meeting?  It was a pleasant surprize… the weather actually co-operated and we had a special evening with a theme… to celebrate “Chinese New Year”!  Alice and Fred Chow (our Treasurers) really spoiled everyone!  They were kind enough to bring some delicious home-made Chinese Food and they also gave each person at the meeting… a small red/gold envelope with a coin inside for “Good Luck”!  We were supposed to watch a Chinese DVD but the Glenrose Hospital equipment just wasn’t compatible with the Chow’s DVD?  A BIG THANK YOU to Alice and Fred!  A BIG THANK YOU to Sharon Anderson for “stepping-up to the plate” as they say and “brain-storming” with the group that evening!  Everyone there had a wonderful time!  

 

For many of you who may be new and are now on our email distribution list… you may be wondering who we are?  We are a “unique” Support Group for SURVIVORS of Stroke, their Caregivers and loved ones who meet at the Glenrose Rehabilitation Hospital, on the last Monday of each month to socialize and hear a special guest speaker.  We hold meetings in the months of September, October, November, January, February, March, April and May.  For our December meetings we have hosted an Annual Christmas Pot-Luck Dinner and in June we have hosted an annual SRA – Edmonton Picnic!  We do not meet over the summer months (July and August) but we do have an answering machine, please phone (780) 485-3052, leave a message and someone will get back to you.  We also have a website at www.sraedmonton.org. 

 

The SRA Executive and Board of Directors are all Volunteers & they are either a Stroke Survivor/Fighter or a Caregiver!  At the October 27^th, 2008 Annual General Meeting I was again voted in as the President (I’m a Caregiver), our Vice-President is Marie Connell (also a Caregiver), our Treasurers are Fred Chow (a Stroke Survivor) and his wife Alice Chow (his Caregiver) and the Recording Secretary is Jorie Clements (representative from E.B.I.R.S.).  Our Members-At-Large include:  Bev Decore (Past President & Caregiver), Michele Clapp (Caregiver), Joan McCreight (Caregiver), Shawn McCreight (Stroke Survivor), Sharon Anderson (Caregiver), Randy Bell (Stroke Survivor), Rhondda Jones (works as a Co-ordinator at the Regional Stroke, Alberta Health Services) & Cindy Schulz (works at the Glenrose Hospital).  We have a Phoning Committee (Michele, Joan and Marie) who regularly phone our membership list to remind people about our meetings & special events.  THANK YOU to each of you for taking on these “volunteer” positions.

 

We hope everyone will enjoy attending our monthly 2009 SRA – Edmonton meetings.  We have some new programs to present, special guest speakers and FUN get-togethers planned!  THANK YOU to the Program Committee (Jorie, Randy and Cindy).  Please look over the attached 2009 SRA Calendar of Events.  If you have any other ideas and or topics you would like to hear, please contact me…at our SRA number 485-3052.

 

If you are “new” to SRA, we are very happy you have come to visit us!  If you are a paid member – thank you for your “financial support” to our membership!  If you are a non-paid member – PLEASE see Fred or Alice Chow and they will gladly take your membership money and get you paid-up and in “good standing”!   Our membership fees are very reasonable at $10.00 for a single person or $15.00 for a family, for the year!  We also welcome charitable donations and a tax receipt will be issued to you for them.  We are a “non-profit” organization but we do have some expenses to be paid.  You are more than welcome to come to any of our meetings and see for yourself what we are all about and to listen to our guest speakers!

 

Our guest speaker for our February 23^rd, 2009 meeting will be Zach Holtzman… on “Tax Talk” (very good information regarding tax credits for the disabled for their 2008 Income Tax Returns)!  Please join us at 6:30 p.m. for refreshments and guest speaker at 7 p.m.  Hope to see you there!
