CARRIE’S REPORT                    j0439072

Five of us were invited to attend the 2010 SRAA Peer Support/Leadership Workshop/Facilitator Training weekend - in Calgary April 23 - 25, 2010.

I was so excited to go, to meet other Stroke Survivors and Caregivers, to learn of their experiences and journeys, and what’s to look forward to.

Jackie Poff and I met Gary Gutscher, Giri Srinivasan, Randy Bell and Bev Decore at the Hotel on Friday.  We had several hours to talk and meet one other.  I could tell it was going to be a great weekend.

Saturday we met everyone for the first day - from Leduc, Red Deer, Calgary, Medicine Hat and Lethbridge.  There were stroke survivors, Caregivers, Volunteers and even a Neurological Physiotherapist, all interested in supporting stroke!

During the two days, we studied the SRAA Framework, current things that work and possible changes to be improved, leadership skills, the role of the Facilitator, differences in support groups and taking care of ourselves. There was a lot of positive energy and ideas all weekend.

We shared our ideas between Chapters on ways to improve our own chapter to create plans and run a better working meeting, using tips and ideas shared in several mock exercises.  The time flew by!  And, each minute was used wisely, with the help of a Facilitator.

I think we all learned a lot, met good new friends and went home energized!  It was worth every penny!

All of us would like to “Thank” the generous person who donated all the funds for our 2010 SRAA Peer Support/Leadership Workshop/Facilitator Training weekend and help to encourage us to Pay it Forward.
