PRESIDENT’S REPORT

 

WELCOME to the Stroke Recovery Association (SRA) of Edmonton.  We are a “unique” Support Group for SURVIVORS of Stroke, their Caregivers & Loved Ones who come to the Glenrose Rehabilitation Hospital, on the last Monday of each month to meet, socialize & hear a special guest speaker.  These support meetings occur during the months of September, October, November, January, February, March, April & May.  Each December we host a Special Christmas Event ( eg. Pot-Luck Dinner or to a Restaurant) & in June we host an Annual SRA Picnic!  We do not meet over the summer months (July & August) but we do have an answering machine at (780) 485-3052 & you can always leave a message and someone will get back to you. 

 

My name is Gladys Marie Magega (Caregiver for my Mom) & on October 26^th, 2009 at the SRA Annual General Meeting I was re-elected once again as your President.  Our Vice-President is Marie Connell (Caregiver for her sister-in-law Kathleen Brown & on the Phoning Committee) for another year.  Our Treasurers for another year are Fred (a Stroke Survivor) and his wife Alice Chow (Fred’s Caregiver)!  Our new Recording Secretary is Charlotte Martynuik.  Welcome Charlotte!  Our Board of Directors (Members-at-Large) consists of:  Bev Decore (Past President), Michele Clapp (Phoning Committee), Joan McCreight (Caregiver for her son Shawn & on the Phoning Committee), Shawn McCreight (Stroke Survivor), Sharon Anderson (Caregiver for her husband), Randy Bell (Stroke Survivor), Gail Elton-Smith (Stroke Co-ordinator) & Syke Stein (Representative from the Glenrose Rehabilitation Hospital).  A Huge THANK YOU to all of these Members for taking on these “Volunteer” positions for the 2009- 2010 Membership year! 

 

If you are “new” to our Stroke Support Group, we are very happy you have come to visit us!  If you are a paid member - Thank You for your “financial support” to our membership!  If you are a non-paid member – PLEASE see Fred or Alice Chow at the meeting and they will gladly take your membership money and get you paid-up and in “good standing”!   Our membership fees are very reasonable at $10.00 for a single person or $15.00 for a family, for the year!  We also welcome charitable donations and a tax receipt will be issued to you for them.  We are a “non-profit” organization but we do have some expenses to be paid.

 

Our next big event will be a “Christmas Dinner-Out” on Monday, December 14^th, 2009 at “ABC Restaurant” located at 12707- 140 Avenue (north side Edmonton) with lots of “free parking” & handicap accessible!  Our reservation is for 6:00 pm sharp!  We will be seated in a private room & it holds a maximum of 40 guests!  Everyone will be responsible to pay for their own meal.  It will be a set menu: either a starter caesar salad or a cup of soup; 1 out of the 3 dinner entrée choices; dessert & 1 beverage with free refills; all for $19.00/person (this includes your meal, gst & 15% gratuity)!  If you are planning to attend please call our SRA answering machine at (780) 485-3052 & leave us a message with your name & how many are attending with you!  We hope you will join us!  In the New Year we will resume our monthly meetings on Monday, January 25^th, 2010.

 

Guest Speaker for Monday, November 30^th, 2009 meeting will be Heather Crowe, Special Needs Recreation Liaison, Communities of Interest, Community Services, City of Edmonton.  Heather is associated with the Active Living Alliance & will be discussing physical activity based programs in Edmonton for individuals with disabilities.  Please join us & bring along a friend!  Refreshments will be served at 6:30 pm & the meeting will start at 7 pm in Conference Room A (lower level) of the Glenrose Rehabilitation Hospital.
