President’s Message

WELCOME to the Stroke Recovery Association (SRA) of Edmonton. The SRA Board and I hope you had a wonderful, safe summer!  As always, the time flew by very quickly!  The weather was temperamental but we survived!

We are a unique Support Group comprised of Stroke/Brian Injury Survivors and their Caregivers!  We hope you are ready for another exciting SRA year 2008 – 2009!

If you are new to our Support Group, we are very happy you have come to visit us; in fact, we hope you will consider joining us each month.  We meet at 6:30 pm (refreshments) and 7 pm – 8:30 pm for the meeting, on the lower level at the Glenrose Rehab Hospital.  Our meetings are on the last Monday of each month from September to June.  We have a special guest speaker at each meeting except for December (Christmas Potluck Dinner) & June (SRA Annual Picnic).  We are closed over the summer but we do have a SRA answering machine on which you can leave your message and someone will return your call.   The number is 780-485-3052.

Our membership fee is very reasonable:  $10.00 for single and $15.00 for family.  For those wishing to join or renew their membership, PLEASE see Fred or Alice Chow (the Treasurers) at our meetings and they will gladly take your membership money, get you paid-up in “good standing” and provide you with a tax receipt.  Any and all donations are appreciated and you will be given a tax receipt for them.

For those who were able to attend our Annual SRA Picnic on Monday, June 9th, wasn’t it GREAT!  It was wonderful to see families and friends come and join SRA members for this special outing.  A big THANK YOU to our SRA membership and guests for all the great salads and desserts!

THANK YOU to Joan McCreight and Michele Clapp for donating all the draw prizes!  THANKS also to all the volunteers who helped with the picnic!  Another THANK YOU to the two M & M Meat Shops (Namao Centre & Northgate) who provided all the wieners, shrimp rings with sauce & cream puffs and to Palisades Safeway who provided all the hotdog buns, plates, napkins, cups and condiments!  To avoid the wind and mosquitoes we took advantage of setting-up and eating indoors at our usual site in Rundle Park.  This year, SRA donated all the leftover foods (wieners, buns, condiments, salads and desserts) to the Youth Emergency Shelter assisting their non-profit organization and giving them a picnic too!

As many of you know, next month’s meeting is on Monday, October 27th and it will be our AGM (Annual General Meeting).  Please see the Notice to Attend in this month’s newsletter.  We have Rhondda Jones, Regional Stroke Service Coordinator, Regional Stroke Program, Capital Health as our guest speaker and she will provide us with a Capital Health update for stroke survivors living in the community.  We will also have our elections for the Executive.  If there is someone you would like to nominate (even if it’s yourself), please talk to one of the Executive Members (me, Jorie, Bev, Alice, Fred) or call the SRA phone message machine at 780-485-3052.

Would you like to volunteer to be on the Board, be a part of the phoning committee, or a meeting greeter?  Please let me know.  A reminder – the SRA’s Board of Directors are all Volunteers!

til later…

Ms Gladys Marie Magega (current President of the SRA of Edmonton)

On The Lighter Side

Would You Be Scared?

I was trying to get my seventh-grade history class to understand how the Indians must have felt when they first encountered the Spanish explorers. "How would you feel," I asked, "if someone showed up on your doorstep who looked very different, spoke a strange language and wore unusual clothes? Wouldn't you be a bit scared?"

"Nah," one boy answered, "I'd just figure it was my sister's date."

General Meetings: Conference Room A (lower level) Glenrose Rehab Hospital at 7 p.m.
